ABSTRACT

The word ‘inclusion’ covers sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, gender, as well as the issue of special needs. The focus of this chapter is special needs and the aim of this chapter is to provide the reader with a taste of each specific condition and to provide some practical suggestions to help make provision for these children more relevant and meaningful. This chapter cannot replace in-depth study of any of the conditions but I hope to bring Pam, the learning support assistant, and others like her closer to understanding that using appropriate teaching methods and materials helps children with each of these conditions. Most of the suggestions are quite easily achievable in any classroom. This chapter reviews the most commonly met needs but does not represent the full range of needs which may be found in schools today.
