ABSTRACT

The computer and video games sector is currently one of the fastest growing and dynamic forms of popular entertainment in the world.1 The biggest grossing DVD of 2002 was, for the first time, not a film but a video game. ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ sold over 1 million copies on its opening day of sales in the USA. If ‘Vice City’ had been a film, this would have represented takings equivalent to its being the thirty-fifth highest grossing opening weekend ever.2 It sold over 1 million copies in the UK in the eight weeks between its release and Christmas 20023 and to date has sold around 5 million copies worldwide, adding to the 11 million copies sold of its three predecessors.4
