ABSTRACT

The composer, some five feet four inches in height, with piercing grey eyes, an oval face and firm mouth, and a high forehead capped by a mass of hair, was already an internationally known figure. The previous year, he had toured Central European countries and had composed The Damnation of Faust, Harold in Italy, Romeo and Juliet and perhaps his best-known work, the Symphonie fantastique. Berlioz was happy to take up residence with Jullien and his wife in their house at 76 (now 27) Harley Street, behind Oxford Street. He was assured that it was only a few steps to Drury Lane, and was surprised to find that the walk took him three-quarters of an hour.
