Miki Takeo: An outsider stands firm inside the LDP
Just prior to Miki Takeo’s selection as prime minister in 1974, Bungei Shunjū, one of Japan’s major weekly political magazines, ran a feature article entitled “Tanaka Kakuei: His Money Connections and Personal Connections” (Tachibana 1974). The article itself was more explosive than the title as it made several allegations of wrongdoing on the part of the sitting prime minister. These allegations sparked the Tanaka real-estate scandal and resulted in Tanaka’s resignation from office. Miki Takeo became the new prime minister and successfully led the passage of political reform.
