ABSTRACT

Fed up with the concrete ‘boxes’ being added to Chicago’s storied skyline, Mayor Daley and city planners are laying down the law to developers and architects.1

On February 16 2003, the Sunday Chicago Sun-Times headline read: “Daley: No More Ugly Buildings.” Below this command, a follow-on headline read: “Demands developers stay on the cutting edge.” The same front page also told you to “Fly the Flag” under an announcement “No help at the UN,” as Powell’s appeal to the U.N. for cooperation in the proposed invasion of Iraq appeared to have failed.
