ABSTRACT

As we saw in Chapters 3 and 4, the electoral support for the extreme right has varied from country to country and from year to year, illustrating a picture of uneven growth and success in Western Europe. Millions of people have voted for extreme right parties and movements in the post-war and contemporary context. The extreme right parties may be seen as marginal on the whole, but at times – buoyed up by favourable electoral results – they have moved into the mainstream and emerged as significant players in their respective polities.
