ABSTRACT
It is common in the social sciences for an approach in one discipline or field to adapt its inspiration and most basic assumptions from another discipline. ‘Structuralism’ has its origins in linguistics as a model for social and cultural analysis, drawing upon what was, until the 1950s, one of the most successful strands in linguistics. In fact, structural linguistics was itself deemed in certain respects the most successful of the human and social sciences.
