ABSTRACT
Ventilatory support usually necessitates endotracheal tubes (ETTs) or tracheostomy. ICU nurses therefore are responsible for ensuring patency of, and minimising complications from, artificial airways. This chapter describes types of tubes usually used in the ICU, main complications of intubation and controversies surrounding endotracheal suction.
