ABSTRACT

Blood is a major transport mechanism for the body, so what is in blood reflects body activity. ICU nurses usually download results from desktop computers, so recognising abnormal values and knowing what to do about them enables early and appropriate interventions. This chapter outlines main haematology and biochemistry results. Liver function tests, including albumin, are outlined in Chapter 42 and cardiac markers (troponin, myoglobin, CK) are included in Chapter 30.
