ABSTRACT
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is secondary to other pathologies and has been variously called ‘consumptive coagulopathy’ and ‘defibrination syndrome’. DIC is uncontrolled systemic activation of coagulation, just as SIRS is uncontrolled systemic activation of inflammatory homeostatic responses.
