ABSTRACT
ARDS, frequently progressing into multi-system failure, is a major cause of ICU admission. This chapter concentrates on pathophysiology and medical interventions and treatments. Much nursing time is devoted to assisting doctors (monitoring, giving prescribed treatments) so nurses need to understand pathology and treatments. Prolonged stay and poor prognosis may increase psychological needs of ICU patients and families.
