Inotropes and vasopressors

Inotropes are frequently used to maintain adequate blood pressure in critically ill patients. Inotropes (inos ‘fibre’ in Greek) alter stretch of cardiac and arteriole muscle fibres. Vasopressors (also called ‘vasoconstrictors’) stimulate vasoconstriction. These effects are mediated through stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.
