Clotting time should be checked and monitored on admission and then as appropriate. Potentially risk factors that could be modified include
■ removing unneeded invasive equipment ■ avoiding oesophageal equipment if possible, or inserting it under platelet
cover ■ adjusting DVT prophylaxis ■ avoiding anti-coagulants ■ controlling blood pressure ■ avoiding traumatic interventions.
