The relative lull on the border did not reflect the depth of the basic conflict between the two countries, which became increasingly acute after the Sinai Campaign.1 Nasser now had two defeats to revenge on Israel: 1948 and 1956. He had been occupied since then with other problems both internal and external, but he never forgot.
