ABSTRACT
To develop a basic understanding of the structure of language – including the anatomy of words – is a worthwhile investment in time and effort for all learners, but it is essential for those who struggle with developing literacy skills. Adams (1990) argued that “a deep and thorough knowledge of letters, spelling patterns, and words, and of phonological translations of all three, are of inescapable importance to both skilful reading and its acquisition”.
