ABSTRACT

This is an account of a learning set which persisted through several different combinations of participants, with one person being a member all the way through. Its members were chief probation officers. It lasted from 1994 until 2004, and was facilitated by the author of this chapter. The chapter is a piece of reflection on the part of the facilitator, weaving together a narrative account of the activities of the set at various stages of its life with the story of the changing circumstances in which participants worked, in the eye of the storm of changes in public management. The author reflects on the process employed within the set, and its benefits and disadvantages.
