ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the issues that arise in the years immediately after the end of the Induction Year. At this time, many teachers confront decisions about when to change schools, how soon it is appropriate to accept additional responsibilities, and even whether they want to stay in the profession. There is in fact a significant loss to the profession of teachers in their first three years, and it seems that many do not return. This is also the point at which it is wise to consider a career plan. Talk with more experienced colleagues about the sorts of options that are open to you now and in both the medium and longer terms. Try to review these options at regular intervals. Do not bother to wait for an appraisal; it is your career and you should be prepared to be in the driving seat.
