Self-interest and social preferences

Sometimes, rationality is defined as maximization of self-interest. However, this relationship is not unequivocal. As Sen (1987) argues, this view of rationality rejects an ethics-related view of motivation. To see any departure from self-interest as evidence of irrationality must imply a rejection of the role of ethics in actual decision making.
