ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses Chinese foreign policy towards the Korean Peninsula, focusing on the North Korean nuclear crisis which has captured the world’s attention in recent years. China has been one of the key players in dealing with the regime in Pyongyang, being a host for the much-publicized Six-Party Talks, which started in August 2003 and include China, the USA, North and South Korea, Russia and Japan. Although this chapter focuses on Chinese foreign policy towards North Korea in terms of its nuclear programme and other international concerns along the lines of the Six-Party Talks, it will also discuss Sino-Japanese coordination, and the linkage between Chinese North Korea policy and the ups and downs of the relationship between Beijing and Tokyo.
