Case study 1: The Salim Group’s financial activities in the 1990s

The Salim Group, the largest and most diversified business conglomerate in Indonesia, officially divides its businesses into 11 divisions: agribusiness, food and consumer goods, automobile and auto parts, construction materials, chemicals, computer and telecommunication, natural resource development, trading and distribution, multi-industries, real estate development, financial services and overseas business. However, the conglomerate has not adapted a group holding structure such as the Astra Group (i.e. a shareholding structure consisting of a holding company, a sub-holding company and an operating company), so it is not clear by whom and how it is owned.
