ABSTRACT

Ergometry-based physiological testing has been the mainstay of many physiological investigations and thus there is a wealth of information on the physiological responses to such exercise. However, there is a much smaller volume of information where cyclists have used an ergometer which accommodates their own bicycle or with sufficient adjustability to match the appropriate cycling position. The development of mobile power measurement devices (i.e. SRM power meter) have also added greatly to our ability to assess the physiological demands of specific cycling events and affords the opportunity to develop a range of new specific tests in the future. Prior to the adoption of any new protocol it is important to establish that the test is reliable and sensitive to changes in performance. The tests described in this chapter are broadly similar to those recommended by British Cycling but despite their regular use there is limited information on some aspects of reliability and less information on the sensitivity to changes in performance.
