During Julia Domna’s quarter century on the throne, the members of her extended family amassed stupendous wealth 1 and rose to prominent positions in the imperial government. Her sister Julia Maesa’s husband, Julius Avitus Alexianus, had served as consul and provincial governor. 2 Maesa’s two daughters, Julia Soaemias and Julia Avita Mamaea, assumed prominent positions at court, and their Syrian husbands held important posts under both Septimius Severus and Caracalla. 3
