ABSTRACT

I have worked with five different headteachers in three schools as a senior manager and another four as a head of department. Over the years I talked to countless deputy headteachers about the vast variety of leadership styles on offer from headteachers. The only constant feature of headship is that because of the varied personalities of those who take on the role, they each do it very differently. As a member of the senior management team, you are going to have to find a way of adapting to what you’ve got. If that person has appointed you in the first place, then at least you have got initial goodwill on your side.
