ABSTRACT

The incredible variety of work I am supposed to be handling simultaneously never fails to amaze me. A typical example occurred the other day. I was checking the rules that allow some newly arrived ethnic minority pupils exemption from the SATs league tables. As I walked across the playground, deep in thought about where the school would stand in terms of its value-added criteria this year as a result of this possible alteration, I walked straight into a hysterical mob of youngsters gathering around the stiff little body of a dead mouse. Some of the boys were trying to kick it at one of the girls, who were standing around screaming hysterically. One particularly odious Year 10 boy stooped down to pick up the dead mouse and fling it into the group of girls. SATs

• the multi-tasking element of a school senior manager’s job in terms of the pressure to function as a office administrator whilst simultaneously dealing with crowd-control situations;

• ways you can prioritise your work and organise your time to deal with the multi-task environment;

• the secretive and ‘covert’ strategies you might use to ‘trick’ the system and its heavy expectations on you so you can stay sane and still do a good job.
