ABSTRACT

In almost all the job descriptions you will see for senior management, one of the essential person specification criteria is to have the ambition to go on to headship. Is it really a prerequisite for an assistant or deputy headteacher to aspire to be headteacher of a school? Many of you would not have joined a senior management team if you did not have this in the back of your mind. The first step for the assistant headteachers among you will be to become deputy headteachers with a wider strategic remit before thinking of applying for headship.
