ABSTRACT

These are the two generic job titles in senior management teams (SMTs), other than the headteacher: one is described as ‘assistant’ and the other as ‘deputy’.

Assistant headteacher and deputy headteacher can mean very different job descriptions in different schools. Despite the huge variation, certain characteristics of the positions often hold good

In this chapter we look at:

• the differences between assistant and deputy headteacher roles;

• the pros and cons of applying for promotion externally or internally;

• using the school performance tables as a quick way of deciding whether to send for the job details;

• how to use person specifications and job descriptions; • filling in the application form and crafting a supporting

statement; • preparing for the interview process, in particular the most

regular questions that are asked of prospective senior managers;

• anecdotal advice about what to avoid doing at senior management interviews.
