ABSTRACT

This chapter presents current planning and scheduling practices in the UK. It begins by identifying planning and scheduling processes before demonstrating the VIRCON project.

Figure 4.1 shows a generic planning process, thus identifying the relationship among the planning processes at all levels. These processes are subject to frequent iterations prior to completing the plan on a live construction project. For example, if the initial completion date does not meet the contractual finished date, project resources, cost or even scope may need to be re-defined. In addition, planning is not an exact science. Two different teams could generate very different plans for the same project.
