ABSTRACT
One of the recurring themes of this book is the heightening, widening and intensifying levels of mobility that characterise the lives of people in the Global South. This mobility does not only embrace the movement of individuals, whether for work, play or out of necessity. It also extends to commodities, products, capital, diseases, organisations, knowledge and ideas. That said, the focus here is on human mobility and, more particularly, on migration. Sheller and Urry (2006: 207) observe that ‘all the world seems to be on the move’ and they set out a ‘new mobilities paradigm’ which is said to be ‘spreading into and transforming the social sciences’ (2006: 208). The essence of this ‘mobility turn’ is set out in the first column of Table 6.1.
