ABSTRACT
Until now I have emphasized the importance of colonial political economy as the
terrain upon which subsequent political formations in British India arose. But in
speaking of the state, or more precisely what Mahmood Mamdani (1996) has
called the ‘mode of administration’ we must consider how British strategies of
rule and domination affected politicization among various castes and classes.
