But the truth is, the neutral mask is principally a tool in training, and not a performance tool at all. Theatre teachers and directors have been using the neutral mask in the workshop for many decades. It is used for a variety of reasons. It promotes stillness and neutrality, and highlights ticks and mannerisms. It encourages an inward focus for the actor, a pure sense of movement based on clear objectives, and both clarity and economy in thought and gesture.
