MASKS!? IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY!?

Ruth Mackenzie, in a speech in 2003 at the Chichester Festival Theatre, commented on how, in all aspects of British culture, everybody sought out the ‘new’ – the latest fashions, music, art, the hot film, the new magazine etc. Except theatre. Mention the ‘new’ in theatre and there is often a sharp intake of breath. Why is this? Because, for all the developments in so many different areas of performance and culture, mainstream theatre has undergone virtually no change at all.
