ABSTRACT

The period of book development from birth to 2 is the one that has received the least recorded consideration. In the first of the reading diaries, Dorothy White began her recording only when Carol was 2 (BbF), and even the Cragos, the most meticulous and thorough observers to date (Prelude), have very few records before this age, and did not keep records of Anna or her sister Morwenna as infants. Shelby Wolf began her records when Lindsey was 3-2 (Wolf 1988: 2), and despite the fact that she had a second child while she was working on the Lindsey material, there are no infant records of Ashley either. Cushla is the only child for whom there is a record of book behaviour as an infant (Cushla: 15-58).
