ABSTRACT
As a student, I spent my summers working as a labourer on a building site. Each year one of my naïve fellow students was invariably sent by one of the tradesmen to the supplies hut for ‘a long stand’. The worker in charge of supplies, familiar with the joke, told the unsuspecting student to wait. Of course the student was made to wait and wait and wait – a long stand.
