ABSTRACT

Traditionally, the school curriculum in England and Wales has been largely determined by the requirements of public examinations. The National Curriculum, first introduced in 1988 (DfEE/QCA, 1999; ACCAC/NAW, 2000) represents a further defining feature. A useful starting point in the consideration of grammar teaching would be to establish the place of grammar within the MFL National Curriculum and GCSE examinations.
