ABSTRACT

From the discussion of the cultural, political and economic background of Chinese outbound tourists in Chapters 2 to 4 and their behaviour and experiences in Chapters 5 and 6, it should have become apparent that Chinese visitors differ substantially not only from western, but also from Japanese and other Asian tourists. They require not only to be informed about the offers of specific destinations and tourism companies but also to be offered specific products and communicated with in a specific way. Furthermore, the sharp divisions between the different levels of income and sources of funding for different groups of outbound travellers call for an even greater differentiation. Finally, some 20 years of leisure tourism experience have already produced some seasoned travellers who differ from the majority of first-time visitors to the world beyond the borders of the People’s Republic of China.
