ABSTRACT

In this chapter we look at the same issues addressed in Chapter 2 by Raban but with a different purpose, to examine gender differences in ICT usage. The aim of this chapter is to describe the differences between men and women regarding ownership, usage and diffusion of ICTs. Is there a genderrelated digital divide (gender gap in ICTs) and, if so, what are its causes? The gender gap is a major issue that has been addressed by researchers in the past. The studies related to the gender gap in ICTs started as emerging technologies penetrated rapidly into our lives. This reality changed traditional patterns of daily life and introduced new ways of work and leisure (Mackenzie and Wajcman, 1999).
