ABSTRACT

The dramatic reforms in the health service in recent years, arising from both strategy and review, have and will continue to have a significant impact on the way in which the health service in Ireland is managed. Whilst structural change is cited as a key element in the furtherance of delivery of a quality, people-centred service, the management of health service human resources will also prove critical in ensuring success. This chapter will provide a brief review of health service change in an Irish context, focusing particularly on the management development activities of clinical nurse managers in line with the generic and specific competencies identified to fulfil the clinical nurse manager role.
