ABSTRACT

Where have our leaders gone? For over twenty years now there has been a call for leadership in society. After many independent enquiries into accidents and deaths, political scandals, public sector enquiries, business failures, and responses to disasters, the story of a failure of leadership is told over and over again. What has caused this leadership deficit? What has this to do with schools and education? I am not holding any particular individual or organisation responsible for what needs to change and improve in society because that is not possible. But I do believe that it is possible to change society in such a way that individuals take more responsibility, challenge the status quo, provide leadership across all aspects of society and in this, the role of schools and education as a whole has an important part to play.
