ABSTRACT

Learning materials and resources include visual aids such as handouts and slides/overheads, which include text, diagrams and pictures, plus other media such as audio, video and animations. This chapter considers how you can select and design learning materials that aim to promote and guide student activity both inside and outside formal class contact time – e.g. from information giving, to providing opportunities for students to interact with the materials during a session, to helping students read around the subject, to preparing for tutorials, seminars and assessments. We look at how you might select and design learning materials and resources that support your students’ learning – while programme and course management documentation are considered in the following chapter. First, though, we examine the diversity of our students in terms of their learning needs and preferences, and the implications this has on the selection and design of learning materials and resources.
