ABSTRACT

The events which occurred in India in the aftermath of its May 1998 nuclear tests caused widespread confusion around the globe. How did a single event such as the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction allow an entire nation, from illiterate day labourers to influential policymakers, to be overcome by a state of mass exaltation? This author’s perplexity about these events and his resulting inquisitiveness mark the starting point of this study.
