Theoretical perspectives on the role of values, images and principles in foreign poilcy

Do values, images and principles belong to the ‘soft’ benign dimension of for-

eign policy? Do values, images and principles belong to the stuff that makes high

politics, or, to the repertoire of window dressing? Are we dealing with ‘luxury

goods’ that will most likely be abandoned if national or European interests are

at stake? How does an ethical dimension of foreign policy relate to other

dimensions? These and similar questions invite further reflection. Hence, the

contemporary research agenda on the promotion of democracy, human rights,

ethics, normative power, values, and principled behaviour. Consequently, a par-

ticularly good reason to make sense of key concepts such as values, images and

principles (VIPs).
