What is consciousness? What makes this question so perplexing is that the answer seems close at hand, hovering invisibly just beyond the horizon of our immediate experience, and yet when we reach out to grasp it the answer eludes us. Taking a familiar and obvious path leads straight into a labyrinth so puzzling that the problem seems utterly insoluble. How can something so familiar – ourselves, our own consciousness – appear so utterly ineffable?
