The scope, purpose and achievements of the executive

In the last chapter it was argued that by comparison with the unprecedented growth in Britain’s economy, population and external power, changes to the influence and working practices of the various branches of the executive were relatively modest. Changes to the quantity, scope and purpose of government, however, were more substantial. It is to these that we now turn.
