ABSTRACT

It will be apparent from what has been said so far that the militaries of all nations have in common that they are a highly structured community – or communities, for the world’s militaries are as diverse as the societies which have produced them, which they are intended to serve and which, intentionally or not, they mirror. It will come as no surprise, then, that the soldiers’ art is a highly principled one. One can only begin to understand, to appreciate, such a community through an understanding of the principles on which it is based.
