ABSTRACT
The military role and involvement in support of humanitarian efforts probably has its origins in 1974 in Cyprus. Up to that time, the military had had the peacekeeping field almost entirely to themselves. The mandate of UNFICYP had since 1964 consisted of only three points: to prevent a recurrence of fighting, to promote law and order, and to contribute to a return to normal conditions.
