ABSTRACT
The Russo-Japanese War offered tantalizing insights into the character of war as it would be fought in the twentieth century. Many factors were identified and many discounted; but they were eventually to coalesce in a new style of warfare by 1918. These profound military developments were matched by equally dramatic political and strategic ones in East Asia over the next 35 years.
