ABSTRACT

Fiction is not the only type of narrative. Adults often engage children in discussion of recent events in their lives. However, because there appears to be a yawning gulf between the fantasy worlds of many children’s stories and the everyday world in which they live, the connection may not be made between the stories that are described as such and the descriptions of events that emerge in the discussions they have with adults. The narrative dimension of many aspects of the child’s discourse and their relevance to care responsibilities can be obscured. This chapter deals with that dimension, starting with the question of child protection.
