ABSTRACT

E-learning is often used as a unifying term to describe the fields of online learning, web-based training and technology-delivered instruction. Whilst the term e-learning has superceded terms such as educational technology, learning technology or Information and Communications Technology (ICT), these are often incorporated into definitions of e-learning. Definitions of e-learning however, vary in their detail and specificity. Some definitions emphasize a wide range of technologies. For example, e-learning is defined by the UK government’s Post-16 E-Learning Strategy Task Force as:

learning with the help of information and communications technology tools. These tools may include the Internet, intranets, wireless networking, PC (personal computer) based technologies, handheld computers, interactive TV and also e-technology to support traditional delivery, for example using electronic whiteboards and video conferencing.
