ABSTRACT

This book has addressed the problem of political conflicts in computer-mediated environments (cyberconflicts). Firstly, the question was addressed of how modernist concepts like power, participation and democracy fit into a global postmodern medium, the internet, in an era of globalization. Following this were arguments and analyses of three theories: media theory, social movement theory and conflict theory, as a way to understand the two kinds of conflict identified (ethnoreligious and sociopolitical), thereby deriving and proposing an integrated analytical framework for cyberconflict. Thirdly, an analysis was undertaken of the cyberconflict environment, by way of investigating the historical background for the phenomenon of cyberconflict, information warfare, cyberterrorism and internet security analysis.
