ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the rise of modern consumerism in China and Japan, where some elements of consumerism had already been suggested, even affecting the West at an earlier point in time. Chinese and Japanese experiences differed, despite a common context that particularly involved significant Confucian influence. Both patterns contrasted with Russia, though there was a shared concern about the foreign and disruptive qualities of consumer interests.
